Scott Uriu, AIA
Principal, Uriu Architecture

Scott Uriu has been practicing architecture since 1993 with his early start working with Frank Gehry and associates from 1993-2000.  At Gehry’s when he started Frank Gehry’s was a boutique practice, and when he left it was a 154 person corporate office.  Scott is the principal of URIU Architecture which he founded in 2023 after 18 years with his previous partnership of Baumgartner+Uriu.

Scott is often seen as a walking contradiction of an architect; a combination of many, on the surface, incompatible ideas – he grew up in Northern California, which imbibed in him an abhorrence to the mis-represented caricature of Southern California, but has spent his majority of his life in Southern California.  His education is from Cal Poly Pomona, perhaps pseudo vocational in nature, and the Architectural Association of London, which could easily be said at the time (pre Brett Steele) as highly non vocational.  He simultaneously teaches at USC and at SCI-Arc and has done so since 2010.

In January of last year, the Eaton Fire destroyed Scott’s home and business in Altadena, fundamentally altering his professional path. He has since shifted his practice's primary focus toward rebuilding Altadena, designing homes for neighbors and collaborating closely with local community groups, and LA County. Consequently, his office has expanded rapidly from a solo operation into his current team of eight collaborators.

Led and programmed by the Monterey Design Conference Committee, MDC is organized & hosted by AIA California.
